Frequently asked questions about pretecho
Still unsure if a pretecho is for you? Below we answer some questions we often hear from parents-to-be.
From when can I book a pretecho?
A 2D pre-echo can be done with us starting at 8 weeks of pregnancy. This ultrasound can be performed
throughout pregnancy, up to approximately 42 weeks.
A 3D/4D pretecho is possible from 14 weeks of pregnancy. The best images arise
usually between 26 and 31 weeks, as the baby often has some fuller cheeks
by this time.
After 31 weeks, it can sometimes become more difficult to make clear 3D images. This may be due to
:
- the amount of amniotic fluid
- the location of the baby
- an anterior placenta
- a higher BMI of the mother
- scars
- a multiple pregnancy
Please note: We do not perform internal ultrasounds.
What if the baby is not in the right frame?
It is possible that during the ultrasound the baby may be lying at an unfavorable angle, making it harder to see the baby’s face or
certain details.
During the ultrasound we try different things to get a better view of the baby,
for example:
- Move or turn for a moment
- drink or eat something
- puddles
- take a short break
Should it still not succeed in creating beautiful images, we will look together at a possibility for a repeat ultrasound.
What is a sex determination?
In a sex determination ultrasound, we use the ultrasound machine to look at the gender
of your baby.
This is best done from 14 weeks of pregnancy.
Should the gender not be clearly visible due to the baby’s position, for example,
we can schedule a repeat ultrasound.
